What health insurers don’t want is sick people! It eats into their profits. And as we all know, in our 21st century society profit is god. So when the health insurers start jumping on the unstoppable vegan bandwagon, it’s certain proof that vegan’s becoming mainstream.

Joel Kahn M.D. tells us that recent research highlights  the positive effects of a vegan diet on health and longevity. Researchers undertook a meta-analysis of nearly 100 studies into the connection between diet and disease published in peer reviewed literature.

Findings were that vegans and vegetarians had lower levels of BMI, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and glucose compared with omnivores. Plus a 25% reduction of ischaemic heart disease and 8% reduction (rising to 15% reduction for vegans) of cancer incidence.

As well as asking doctors to recommend a plant-based diet to their patients, at least one healthcare insurer is offering reduced premiums to vegans and veggies. As their agent Chris Fairfax says,

“There is plenty of clear factual evidence to demonstrate the health benefits of being a vegetarian which should be recognized across the insurance industry. Independent studies show that, on a 12-year follow-up study of 11,000 people, vegetarians have a lower rate of mortality in some significant areas than non-vegetarians.”
