Meat Is Murdering American Rivers

Government data shows that food processing plants are the biggest toxic polluters of waterways in the U.S.

There is no question that industrial agriculture is polluting the nation’s waterways, but huge factory farms are not the only culprits: Food processing plants also dump millions of pounds oftoxic waste into rivers, lakes, and streams, according to an analysis released by Environment America, a national coalition of advocacy groups.

The report listed the top 15 water polluters in terms of volume but focused mostly on Tyson Foods, which processes 73 million pounds of beef, pork, and poultry every week.

“Tyson Foods Inc. and its subsidiaries dumped 104 million pounds of pollutants into waterways from 2010 to 2014,” the report said…

  1. This is shocking, something which most people remain unaware of. The atrocity of raising animals in shocking conditions and murdering them in unimaginable numbers is further compounded by the damage to the environment. This in addition to all the other pollutants is a great threat. Unfortunately the Americans and indeed everyone else will no doubt continue to eat their burgers for a long time to come. While awareness is increasing I think we still have such a long way to go for things to change. Thank you for sharing.

  2. We also need authorities that will enact and enforce legislation to put a stop to this, don’t we? If this horrific agribusiness became less profitable, and prices rise, you would expect consumption to reduce.
